‘One person can change everything about your business.’

Samir Chaudry and Colin Rosenblum on hiring the right people, slowly:

Samir:

I really can’t overstate this enough, but one of my solutions is:

  • the right people, and slow hiring.

One person can change everything about your business, and that goes both ways. The wrong person can ruin your life. The right person— right? I mean, we’ve experienced that.

The wrong person can— it’s just like— it just can occupy your mind at all times. And then, all of a sudden, you’re no longer, like, focusing on creative work because you have this person that is just not working.

The right person can unlock everything. And, the only way to do that is to slowly, slowly build trust.

And, I think we move a lot faster than we think because of the opportunities. ‘Cause you get an opportunity, and you’re like, ‘How could I do that? I could— I just need to hire someone. I’ll bring this person in. They’ll help me make money doing this thing.’ And, you know, you have to actually move a lot slower than that.

Colin:

We move faster than the pace that trust builds.

Samir:

Yes. It’s so important to move at the pace of trust.

I don’t believe there’s a way around the reality that you’ll probably go through a few hires — especially for your first assistant — before you find the right fit.

So, yes, it’s better for everyone if you’re in no particular hurry to commit.

If you go in expecting that your first one or two hires won’t work out, you’ll be a lot less stressed about it, and you’ll avoid language that unfairly communicates a long-term situation to your new EA.

If you’ve kept it clear, from the start, that things are on a trial basis (including how the new person feels about working with you), it’s a much less uncomfortable conversation if/when you have to sunset the relationship.

Samir mentions one more great insight that should absolutely not be missed: Set dates (▶️ @ min. 12:20).
