Ali Abdaal talking with Grace Beverley on Deep Dive with Ali Abdaal:
The conversations that I have with anyone from 500k to like 10 million subscribers is this level of like, ok cool, I’m succeeding as an individual, but I need to figure out how to diversify and try and build a business and a brand that’s separate from me, so that it doesn’t rely on me showing up being like, ‘What’s up guys!’ every single day to the camera, because that is an unsustainable way of living.
And, in a way, I think the arc is:
- people start off with a job, or being students, where they basically have very little autonomy
- to then becoming creators where they’re like, ‘Oo! Autonomy!’
- but then you become a creator, and like, ‘Oh, actually, I am kind of a slave to the algorithm, a slave to consistency — in a way, a slave to the audience, some might say.
And, therefore, kind of the golden end bit is the thing that you did ages ago, before it was cool, which is,
- set up separate businesses which can then, theoretically, run without you
- hire a team
- and build those brands as their own thing.
Eventually, smart YouTubers begin thinking beyond their current success on the channel that’s made them famous.
Having escaped wage slavery is a proud accomplishment, but creator life can become it’s own cage if you remain too long exclusively in the service of a platform you don’t own.
Grace’s path to independence is fascinating, and this conversation is a useful listen if you’re looking to untether yourself from the great algorithm chase.
