‘Stop giving advice to your team.’

Nathan Barry on a smarter way to lead your team:

Nathan:

I think the simplest thing — I say simplest — and hardest is to just stop giving advice. And giving opinions. And so, when someone on our team comes to me — this is one I struggle with, but really trying to work on — is when someone says,

‘Hey, I’ve got this problem. What should we do?’

…especially when the answer seems obvious to me. And I’m like,

‘Oh! You should do this.’

No. Do not do that. What you do is to say,

‘Oh! That’s fascinating. What do you think we should do about it?’

Ali:

Nice.

Nathan:

And you just leave it at that.

Removing yourself as the central source of knowledge and solutions for your team is one of the hardest things any leader learns to do.

One of the smartest, too (for the pain you’ll avoid).
