Shaan Puri with Nick Huber on delegating and hiring:
I was talking to a guy who was a CEO of a multibillion-dollar company and he told me this. He goes, ‘People don’t realize this, but every CEO, every owner of a business, when they walk around the company, it’s like— ‘there was a movie back in the day that, like, had a number on your forehead of, like, how many days you had left, but you couldn’t see it, but other people could see how many days you had left before you died. Some movie.
He named the movie, he goes, ‘It’s like that, but it’s a number that goes up, and 100 means I fully trust you, and zero means, like, you know you’re about to be fired.’
And he was like, ‘Everybody has a little trust number over their head, and every interaction you have with that person is either improving the trust number or decreasing the trust number.
‘So, as an owner, I want to get to a— I want the fastest path to be able to understand:
- What is this person’s trust number?
- How much can I trust them with?
- Can I just hand them the keys and let them run the whole company? Can I let them run part of this?
- Can I only let them execute, but not decide?
- Where are they? And is that number consistently tracking up, or down?’
And so it’s a mental model for— that’s the goal in your company is to have a bunch of high-trust people.
And it’s— what you wanna do is be, like you said, looking inside their brain, getting— running little tests with them so that you understand where they’re at, and you understand: ‘Do I need to phase this person out? Do I need to scope their role better, and structure it better, so that they can star in that context, or are they capable of more?’ And I can actually delegate and offload much more to them.
Many successful YouTube creators don’t realize they’re running a startup.
This is why most continue to burn themselves out working solo, long beyond the point that they should’ve started hiring.
You can lift your quality of life as a creator dramatically once you begin surrounding yourself with the help you need. The money can get better too. [A lot better].
And you don’t have to blow out your monthly revenue on a ton of people right away. Just start with one.
But, by all means, start.
Be sure and catch Nick and Shaan’s whole conversation (it’s unmissable).
