‘You need to start moving your audience off TikTok.’

Amanda Northcutt on the progression of the TikTok ban:

The other possible outcome of this, assuming this passes through and gets signed into law: ByteDance could challenge this law in United States Court.

And, that would very likely not be successful because, like, case law dictates that we value national security — like quelling national security risks — even over and above free speech.

So, I am having a lot of trouble seeing a pathway in which TikTok is not banned in about 12 months time.

So, heads up on that front.

And, it doesn’t mean the government will reach in your phone and take off the app, but it will prevent the download and account creation of any subsequent registrations in the United States, and it will prevent shipping updates — like, software updates — to the TikTok app, itself, thereby rendering it defunct in a matter of months.

So, if you’re a creator on TikTok— you have an audience over there, you need to start very strategically moving them off to another platform, and build a freakin’ email list, which is what we’ve been talking about this entire month.

Amanda Northcutt and team have, indeed been doing an outstanding job at alerting TikTok creators (and creators, in general) about the dangers of social platform reliance.

Wherever you stand on the legality or morality of the shutdown, the fact is,

  • this is going to have a stunning effect on far more creators than it should.

It’s not like creators haven’t been warned. I’ve talked about it… Amanda’s talked about it… it broke like crazy across news outlets…

Here’s the problem:

A large swath of TikTok creators just weren’t around early enough to remember that Vine was huge.

They have no memory of thumb cramps from heart-ing on Periscope. ❤️❤️❤️

For Gens Z and Alpha, MySpace simply never existed — a Gen X’er-Millennial fairytale, despite it having been — from a market dominance standpoint in the early years — far bigger than YouTube is today.

The point we’ve all been trying to make is,

  • platforms come and go.

Except the one you own.
